I worked with Fran 46 years ago when I was employed by the NYSDOT. I was a young, long-haired vegetarian and certainly didn't fit the workplace culture. Consequently, I got a lot of grief from my fellow workers and the foremen alike -- all except Fran. He was the only one who really saw me and treated me with decency, so unlike with the others I always enjoyed being assigned to his crew. From time to time over the years I've remembered this fondly, intending to look him up and let him know how much his kindness back then was recognized and appreciated. Sadly, it's too late for that now, but I want his family to know that Fran was one of the smartest, kindest, most decent human beings I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. The unique light he brought into this world can never be replaced and will be sorely missed by many, I'm sure.
