Obituary of Frederick Todd

Todd, Frederick D. age 75, known by many as "Uncle Fred" passed away peacefully with his wife Joan by his side, in his come at 414 West 2nd Street, Watkins Glen, NY on December 7, 2012. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Tuesday December 11, 2012 starting at 4:00 PM at the Montour Falls Fire Department, 111 Lee Street, Montour Falls, NY. Fred served as a volunteer and paid firefighter for more than 55 years. He started his volunteer fire service career in 1958 when he joined the Montour Falls Fire Dept. He served three years as foreman and was a member and co-captain of their firefighting racing team "The Swamp-stompers." Due to his love and friendship for the members of the Montour Falls Fire Department he asked for reinstatement into the department when he found out he had stage 4-lung cancer. The Montour Falls Fire Dept. accepted his reinstatement this fall, which made him so proud. In 1966, Fred was employed by the City of Ithaca Fire Department, where he retired 26 years later. In 1967 he moved to Trumansburg where he joined the Volunteer Fire Dept. and progressed through their ranks and was elected as the first Assistant Chief in 1972. He was also a member of the Watkins Glen Fire Dept. when he and his wife Joan moved to the Watkins Glen/Montour Falls area in 1997 and was one of their Fire Commissioners. The Enfield VFD made Fred an honorary member. Fred became active as a representative for the Central New York Firemen's Association in the Firemen's Association in the Firemen's Association State of New York. In 1973 where he was elected Historian of the Central New York Fireman's Assn. And in 1978 was elected their President (1978-80). As a member of FASNY he was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1981. Served as Secretary of the board of Trustees for the Firemen Home in Hudson, NY for FASNY. He held numerous positions in FASNY and was serving as Historian for Central New York Firemen's Assoc. upon his death. Frederick was awarded the Ray Sherburne award presented by the Central New York Firemen's Assoc. in 2006 for his dedicated service to the Central New York Firemen's Assoc, and FASNY. Fred also retired from the Ithaca School District after 21 years as a supervisor of students. Fred is survived by his wife Joan Marie Scanlon Todd of 50 years, his two sons; Roland & Robert, daughter-in-law; Laurie, granddaughters: Nichole Furey, Ashley Todd, Madeline Todd, Great Granddaughters; Hazel, Caroline & Harper, all his many nieces and nephews, and others who knew him as Uncle Fred. In lieu of flowers Fred wanted donations made in his honor to the Montour Falls Fire Department at PO Box 369, Montour Falls, New York, 14865
