Obituary of Eunice Smith
Eunice Naomi Devonald Smith, age 97, passed away March 28, 2012
Eunice was born January 31, 1915 in Orange, NJ. She was the youngest child of nine children to Frederick Charles Devonald and Julia Gertrude Miller Devonald. Frederick and Julia had met when both worked for Thomas Edison in his Menlo Park, NJ laboratory.
Eunice married Alden Harold Smith of Hackettstown, NJ on June 23, 1945 at The Old Greenwich Presbyterian Church in Stewartsville, NJ.
Eunice and Alden lived in the Hackettstown, NJ area from their wedding date to 1951 when they moved to Asbury, NJ. In 1966 Eunice, Alden and their five children moved to Beaver Dams, NY.
Eunice worked for the FBI before her marriage. She taught at the Elmira Business Institute, she substitute taught in both NJ and NY. Eunice was involved with the NJ PTA (Parent Teachers Association), served on the Catlin, NY township planning board and was a member of the township historical society. Eunice also volunteered at the Steele Memorial Library.
Interests for Eunice included reading, crafts, flowers and a much-loved chair caning class.
Eunice was preceded in death by son, Devonald Smith in 2001, husband, Alden in 2010 and her Devonald siblings, Florence, Edwin, Frank, Margaret, William, Oliver, Ida and Stanley.
Surviving Eunice are sons Peter Smith and Martin Smith of Beaver Dams, NY, daughter June (Keith) Williams of Wyalusing, PA, Penelope (Ralph) Charlier of Corning, NY, step grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
