Obituary of Sandra Sidle
Mrs. Sandra Jean (Wickham) Sidle returned to her heavenly home while resting in her bed on Tuesday September 9, 2014 in Alpine, NY at the age of 74.
Sandra is survived by her husband, David and children Diana Lynn (David VanLoon ) of Mansfield, PA, Margaret Ann (Tony Manning) of Gaithersburg, MD, Karen Jean (Donny Gunning) of Trumansburg, NY and David (Sharon) Sidle of Odessa, NY; brothers, David (Terry) Wickham of Tularoso, NM, John (Jackie) Wickham of Alpine, NY, along with 21 grandchildren, 15 great- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Pamela Sue Ely, her father Loyal Wickham and mother Dorothy (Breedlove) Wickham/Tompkins, maternal grandparents Sherman and Nellie Breedlove and paternal grandparents Minor and Ida (Hayes) Wickham/Meeks.
Sandra was born on March 11, 1940 in Montour Falls, NY to Loyal and Dorothy Wickham. She graduated from Odessa Central School in 1956, and then Pauldines School of Beauty in 1959. She married David Sidle in 1960. Sandra opened the Sidleline Beauty Shop in 1960 and ran it until 1975 when she joined her husband in the family insurance agency, overseeing the financials and later the automation for the agency. Sandra and her husband David raised four children. She was proud of her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always enjoyed preparing meals for a house full of them at holiday occasions.
Sandra was a lifetime member of the Odessa Baptist Church, where she served in the nursery, the Philathea Club, on the board of Deacons, Trustees, Pastoral Search Committee, and the Audit Committee. She served for a time as the Tax Collector for the Town of Catharine, and also on the Zoning Board of Appeals. Over many years, she was very active in the community, being a member of the Watkins Glen Montour Falls Zonta Club, and the League of Women Voters. She also served as a Candy Striper at Schuyler Hospital, an assistant Girl Scout Leader, a 4H Club Leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. Sandra along with her husband and son had been a fixture at Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce Events. She was an avid fan of her children's sports careers, and enjoyed tending her many gardens, caring for her horses, dogs and cats, and watching birds. Sandra enjoyed travel, cooking, sewing, walking in the woods at her home and spending time at the family cottage on Cayuta Lake.
Calling hours will be held Friday, September 12, 2014 from 1-3 pm and 6 -8 pm. at Vedder and Scott Funeral Home 122 N Genesee Street, Montour Falls. A memorial service will be held on Saturday September 13, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Odessa Baptist Church, 200 Maple Ave., Odessa with Pastor Jeremy Spencer officiating. Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Odessa. A celebration of life will follow at the Odessa American Legion (Cole-Hansenberger-Deland) Post 676), Odessa, NY. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Sandra's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Odessa Baptist Church Capital Fund at 102 Maple Ave, Odessa NY 14869. The family would like to thank the team at Care First, the members of the Odessa Baptist Church, the many doctors and nurses at Cayuga Medical Center (Cayuga Cancer Center), and the many independent care givers and community members who gave of their time and offered prayers.
