Obituary of Phyllis Bailey

Phyllis J. Bailey, 89, of Beaver Dams, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin & friend, went to be with her Lord and heavenly family on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility in Montour Falls. Phyllis was born July 7, 1925 in Elmira, NY. She is the daughter of Harry and Amy (Viele) Rice. She was preceded by her husband of 44-years, John Edward Bailey; infant daughter, Ann Louise Bailey; grandson, Johnathan Ryan Bailey and brothers: Harry & James Rice. Phyllis was a member of the Moreland Presbyterian Church, a 70-year member of the New York State Grange and served for many years as Secretary of the Olive Branch & Pamona granges and a 27-year member of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly). Until her health declined she was a volunteer for RSVP, active in Senior Citizens (being selected as Senior Citizen of the Year in 2002) as well as church activities making as many as 22 pies, at a time, for special events. She was 3rd runner-up in the New York State Grange Gingerbread contest in 1963 winning a Magic Chef stove. She had the opportunity to travel throughout the United States and many countries overseas with her dear friend, Helen Messersmith. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-laws: Gary and Deborah (Wicks) Bailey of Beaver Dams, NY; Roy and Lynn (Scharlau) Bailey of Beaver Dams, NY and daughter & son-in-law: Sheila and Mark Hallahan of Horseheads, NY. Grandchildren: Jeremy & Mariam Bailey of Baltimore, Maryland; Jessica & Marc Perrine of Nottingham, Maryland; Benjamin & Catherine Bailey of Joppa, Maryland; William Hallahan of Hot Springs, Arkansas; Stephanie Webster of Corning, NY and Sarah Bailey of Beaver Dams, NY and her great-granddaughter, Olivia Morgan Perrine. Sisters: Anna Mae (Donald) Brown and Doris (Jesse) Kent and sister-in-laws: Nan Stanton of Montour Falls, NY, Louise Bailey of Johnson City, NY and Marjorie Rice of Watkins Glen, NY as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of caring friends. The family will receive relatives and friends at Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls, on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Her service will follow at 8:00 pm with Rev. Anne Campbell officiating. She will be laid to rest at Cayuta Cemetery in Cayuta, NY on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to the Moreland Presbyterian Church or Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility.
