Obituary of Richard D. Bannister
Richard D. "Dick" Bannister, 87, of Montour Falls, NY, passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2024 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Elmira, NY on August 14, 1936, the son of the late Layton and Martha Bannister and graduated from Watkins Glen High School. Dick was a former Boy Scout and served with the US Army Reserves. He was a graduate of the NYS Police Academy for Police Chiefs.
Dick was a truck driver at Shepard Niles for over 40 years. At one time, he was the Police Chief for the Village of Montour Falls Police Department. He served with the Montour Falls Fire Department for over 50 years, proudly driving the pumper truck to serve his community.
He was a long time member of the Montour Falls United Methodist Church where he was a former trustee. He formerly served as President of the National Campers and Hikers Association, Schuyler County Chapter.
Dick was an avid NASCAR, SU and Buffalo Bills fan. He enjoyed camping and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his children, Tom (Debbie) Bannister of Montour Falls, Laurie (Mike) Hanlon of Horseheads, Donna Bannister, David (Kim) Bannister, and Cheryl (Mike) Herold all of Montour Falls; fifteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years, Norma Rennells Bannister in 2020; son, Richard Bannister; brothers, James, Stanley and Robert Bannister.
The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Burke, the staff at Care First Hospice and to his caregivers, Faith, Chris, Barb and Cassi for the care and compassion shown to Dick throughout his illness and passing.
Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, August 15, 2024 from 5-7 pm at Vedder-Scott & Zinger Funeral home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls, NY. His funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm. Private burial will be in Montour Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Montour Falls United Methodist Church or to the Montour Falls Fire Department.
