Obituary of Nadine B. Crippen

Nadine (Brown) Crippen, age 93, of Alpine NY, passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2023.

Nadine was born on July 19, 1930 in Elmira, NY to the late Eldon A. & Kate D. (Cook) Brown. She had four siblings, Donald, Clayton, Robert, and Sharon, who all predeceased her. She graduated from Horseheads High School in 1949 and Arnot Ogden Nursing School in 1952. While raising a young family, Nadine worked as a RN in various doctor offices and at Arnot Ogden Hospital until early 1964 when the family moved from Horseheads to Odessa. In the Fall of that year she started work at Schuyler Hospital eventually becoming Head Nurse of the Emergency Department. She retired in 1992.

Being a mother of five active kids and a nurse, she was well known in the community. She always had a kind word towards people and would lend a helping hand to anyone who asked. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Horseheads and Alpine. In later years, she attended and was an active volunteer at the Odessa-Catharine United Methodist Church. She was a volunteer for many years at the Dutton S. Peterson Memorial Library in Odessa and was active in the Schuyler County Home Bureau. Nadine thoroughly enjoyed quilting and many other craft projects which were lovingly gifted to her children, grandchildren, and friends.

Nadine was a selfless, patient, compassionate and dedicated mother. She raised five children during the sixties and seventies and often went without to ensure her children were well cared for. Her door was always open and she made sure there was always enough food for the many neighborhood kids that walked through the door at dinner time. Nadine loved gardening and helping her family. She was quick to help take care of grandchildren or run errands. It was common to see her, well into her 80s, on a bright summer day mowing her son's massive yard using that Kubota tractor while barn swallows flew about. Nadine also enjoyed hiking with the family. She was a happy and content person.

She loved her family immensely and they loved her the same. Of all her accomplishments, raising and helping raise three generations of children was what she was most proud of.

She is survived by her children: Patricia Sams of Canandaigua NY, Robert Crippen of Newfield NY, Martin (Judy) Crippen of Raleigh NC, Donald (Mary) Crippen of Odessa NY, and Donna (Tom) Bauman of Apopka FL.

She is grandmother of Michael (Sarah) Sams of Pittsburgh PA, Brian Sams of Palmyra NY, Nichole Crippen (Joe Lorenzo) of Benson NC, Kimberly Crippen of Cary NC, Marcia Crippen of Durham NC, Tracy (Nick) Sangprakarn of Montour Falls NY, Craig (Amy) Crippen of Odessa NY, Kevin Bauman of Apopka FL, and Kyle Bauman of River Fall WI. She also has eight great-grandchildren.

She will be dearly missed and never forgotten. A celebration of Nadine's life will be held on February 10, 2024 at the Odessa-Catharine United Methodist Church, 305 Church St, Odessa NY at 2:00 pm with light refreshment to follow.
