Obituary of Donald W. Litteer

Donald W. Litteer, 84, of Dundee, entered unto rest on Sunday, May 8, 2022 at Soldiers & Sailors Hospital in Penn Yan. His niece Donna and her husband Brad were with him when he passed. He was born in Altay, NY on May 23, 1937, the son of the late Frederick and Ethel Litteer and attended Dundee Central School. He worked at Corning Glass for many years. After Donnie left Corning Glass, he transitioned into truck driving. At some point in his career he began driving for R.K. Howell. He drove what his family lovingly referred to as "The Big Green Truck". Donnie loved that truck and would keep it washed and greased. Donnie enjoyed hunting, and turkey shoots. Whether it was a moving or standing target, his nephew Marty said he was an excellent shot. He also enjoyed fishing and stock car racing. His sister, Sadie said in his younger years, he was the proud owner of some beautiful cars and a motorcycle. She remembers a beautiful turquoise 1954 Harley Davidson that Donnie enjoyed riding. Her mother would tell her not to ride with him but she would whenever she got a chance. Donnie's nephews, Marty Litteer and Chuckie Ackley have many wonderful stories they share about their adventures with Uncle Donnie in their younger years. His nephew, Jimmy Barrett was faithful to check on and visit with him. Phil Wright, Donnie's nephew, checked on him and invited him for meals. In Donnie's later years, he loved mowing his lawn and loved the flowers that came up each year that his wife Virginia had planted. Donnie also enjoyed company and reminiscing the days gone by. He was always there to lend a helping hand to his friends when needed. He had many special friends that visited right up until the end: Brenda and Jeff O'Connell, Steve Hill, Charlie Reed, Francis and Lester Johnson, Jim Yeoman, Joe Mattison, Eddie and Elva Zimmerman, and Shelly and Jack Ayers. Donnie was also predeceased by his loving and kind dog, Hershey that drove with Donnie frequently to the Classic Café for morning coffee, his friends used to tease him. Hershey will be laid to rest with Donnie and Ginny. Donnie's household was run by his beloved cat, Buddy. Buddy gave orders and everyone did what they were told. Buddy was a wonderful companion and housemate. Even if you weren't a cat lover, Buddy would win you over with his personality (although he was pretty dominating). Donnie's sister, Sadie, oversaw the household responsibilities that were beyond Buddy the cat's capabilities. Donnie had some health issues that required a caregiver. Jeff O'Connell became his primary caregiver with the help of his wife Brenda. In April of 2022, he had some further health issues and his sister Sadie, niece Donna and her husband Brad had to assist with his care so he could remain in his home as long as possible. His nephew, Stoney Mattison, kept Donnie and his caregivers well fed with home cooked meals. Donnie was predeceased by the love of his life, Virginia L. Litteer. They were married for 56 years. Donnie missed his beloved wife right up until his last breath. He often spoke about how much he missed her. He was also predeceased by his sister, Emma Barrett, brother, Fred (Skip) Litteer, brother Robert Litteer and sister, Lillian Ackley. He is survived by his sister, Sadie Wheeler of Dundee; sister-in-law, Avis Litteer of Penn Yan; and by several nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date. Donnie will be laid to rest in Tyrone Union Cemetery.
