Obituary of Richard C. Mathews
Richard "Dick" Mathews, 68, of Cayuta, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, June 5, 2020 at Arnot Ogden Hospital. He was born in Waverly, NY on January 27, 1952, the son of Lee and Esther (Fitzmaurice) Mathews. Dick served with the US Army from 1972-74 and was a member of the American Legion, Post 0676. On May 6, 1973, he married Cathy-Rae Goodwin in Alpine, NY.
Dick retired in 2010, after 25 years as a New York State Corrections Officer. He was an Elder and founding member of Bible Baptist Fellowship in Alpine, NY, and served faithfully for many years. He was a quiet man of character and good humor who inspired faith in others. He enjoyed being outdoors, preferably around a campfire listening to music, and especially spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends.
He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 47 years, Cathy (Goodwin) Mathews; two daughters, Stacy Kesselring of Van Etten, NY and Cheryl Mathews of Elmira, NY; brothers, Roy (Bonnie) Mathews and Terry Mathews of Van Etten; stepsister, Sue Mathews of Cayuta; stepbrother, Larry Stull of Van Etten; two grandchildren, Joel and Gabriella Kesselring; and by many nieces, nephews, and loved ones. He was predeceased by his parents, Lee and Esther Mathews; his stepmother, Marian Mathews; and brother, Thomas Mathews.
A graveside service with military honors will be held by the family at Hicks Cemetery in the Town of Baldwin. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Vedder-Scott & Zinger Funeral Home, Montour Falls.
