Obituary of Barbara Westervelt

Barbara Ann Westervelt- February 28, 1951 - August 1, 2017, age 66, Wife, Mother, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, Grandmother, Teacher, Friend. The top of Oak Hill Road became a little less colorful in the early morning of August 1, 2017. Barbara (Shrout) Westervelt passed away in the early morning surrounded by her family. Barbara was a lifelong resident of Oak Hill Road where she grew up with her siblings Marilyn, Allison, Steve, Joanne, Will, and Norman as well as numerous cousins who fondly remember her as Maid Marian. Barb enjoyed an illustrious 25 year career teaching in the Newfield Central School District. She taught first, second, and sixth grades. Barb was beloved by her students and colleagues alike. She found tremendous joy in teaching and in the successes of her students. Barb approached each day with a passion and determination to make sure each and every one of her students was successful. Her commitment to her students was unquestionable and was a legacy that will continue for years to come. Her commitment to her colleagues was evident in her tireless work as Union President and her desire to inspire future educators was seen through her work as a mentor teacher and in her work with student teachers. Barb's joy of teaching was only surpassed by her love of gardening and her love of her family. Barb's gardens were the envy of everyone who passed by and who came to visit. Her green thumb was easily recognized in the numerous flower beds that bloomed throughout the summer. Barb's first love was her family. She is survived by her husband Scott, her children Jessica, Jason (Stephanie), Megan (Dylan), and Scott; and her three beautiful grandsons, Hudson, Archer, and Hendrik. Barbara will be missed, but she will be remembered by all who knew her. Her legacy of compassion, kindness, and generosity will live on in her children who will pass these as well as her many other wonderful qualities to her grandchildren. Barb will be fondly remembered by those who knew her for so many reasons but perhaps most for her strength, determination, and her ability to love without condition. Calling hours will be held from 1–3 pm on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home.
