Peter Hoffman

Obituary of Peter M. Hoffman

Peter Hoffman, age 71, of Montour Falls, NY and formerly of Waterloo, NY, died on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, following a short illness. Respecting his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services.

Peter was born in Waterloo, NY to the late Esther M. and Rutherford S. Hoffman. He graduated from Waterloo High School in 1972 and pursued political science studies at SUNY Morrisville and Hope College (Holland, MI).

Music and travel were the focus of Peter's life. He drove or hitchhiked across America, living at times in Texas, Mississippi, Michigan and Illinois. He traveled alone, with friends, or with a stray dog he'd adopted along the way.

Peter was a self-taught blues pianist, making his living by playing wherever a quality piano was readily available. Pete was well known for his magic rebel charm that came through in his music and conversations, performing his own piano arrangements of anti-war protest songs: "Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival; "Universal Soldier" by Buffy Sainte-Marie; "Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag" by Country Joe and the Fish, and many others.

Peter was predeceased by his parents, Rutherford and Esther; and his favorite travelling dog Daisy. He is survived by his brothers, John and Jeff (Debbie); nephews, Sam (Gabby) and Sean; and niece, Sarah. Special thanks to the staff of the New Falls Home in Montour Falls. Donations may be made in Peter's memory to Moveon.org or the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund at sweetrelief.org.
