Obituary of Jeanne E. Gunning Chapman
Jeanne Elizabeth Gunning Chapman, age 81 of Alpine, NY passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 at home, surrounded by her loving family. Jeanne was born on May 22, 1943 in Montour Falls, NY to the late David and Harriette (Teeter) Gunning.
Jeanne was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Stanley Chapman; a daughter, Kimberly S. Smith; her parents-in-law, Nye and Mildred Chapman; a brother, Donald Gunning; sister-in-law, Linda Gunning; and brother-in-law, Roger Chapman. She is survived by her children, Kelly (Mark) Hasselwander of Queensbury, NY and Douglas (Tracy) Chapman of Alpine, NY; son-in-law, Charles Smith of Alpine, NY; siblings, James (Martha) Gunning, Douglas (Debbie) Gunning, Kate (Art) Stillwell, and Mary (Don) Crippen; special friends, Ben Dickens and Bonnie and Claude Cole; grandchildren, Justin (Beth) Smith, Nicholas (Casie) Smith, Lucas Smith, Emily Hasselwander, Mary-Kate Hasselwander, Benjamin Chapman, Hannah Chapman, Colten Chapman, and Ashley (Gary) Gordon; six great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews , and 4-legged companion, Sally.
Jeanne graduated from Odessa-Montour Central School in 1961, where she was involved in many activities. She earned an Associate's Degree in Business Administration from Tompkins Cortland Community College in 1988. She held many secretarial positions before going to Emerson Power Transmission where she worked as a secretary and inventory production control manager, before working her way up to Purchasing Agent. Jeanne worked very hard at her profession, and went on to complete several certifications through the American Production & Inventory Control Society. She retired in 2008 from Emerson, after 24 years of service to the company.
Jeanne enjoyed playing games such as Dominoes, Scat, Five Crowns, and Canasta, which afforded her the opportunity to spend time with family and friends. She also loved watching sports and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, as well as the Cornell University and Buffalo Sabres Hockey teams. Jeanne was an avid reader, and was quite fond of shopping, decorating her home and yard, bowling, and traveling – especially to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She was also a member of the Mechanics Club for many years.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, March 28, 2025 from 12:00-2:00 pm at Vedder-Scott & Zinger Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls, NY. Jeanne's memorial service will begin at 2:00pm with burial to follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
